There’s something immediately intriguing about elusive art collective Breton. For the last couple of years the five friends have been releasing a series of innovative tracks, remixes and visual teasers out of the South London disused bank they call BretonLABS. After whetting fans appetites the group have now released their highly anticipated debut album Other People’s Problems.
Primarily filmmakers the group have created some incredibly cutting edge visuals (just have a look at their previous videos here), so a stand-alone full length music release does sound like a risky move. Especially when they admit that they only started making music because their visual exploits needed a soundtrack. Luckily for us and them the debut proves they’re just as good when it comes to making a record.
Pacemaker starts things off with its eerily sampled strings and pressing drum loop before surprising you with lead man Roman Rappak’s heavily layered, nonchalant vocals that provide the rest of the album with an indie rock edge. The sampling continues in Other People’s Problems and manipulated strings and pianos are partnered with the more abrasive and distorted synths and glitch rhythms to keep tracks from sounding cold and mechanical.
Breton’s filming background seems to have seeped into their musical thinking on this record and cinematic moments are abundant. Edward The Confessor is aggressive and in your face with stabbing synths and riotous chanting, while Interference is anthemic and grand with looming strings and infectious rhythms.
Other People’s Problems is a refreshing and addictive debut from these forward thinking creatives. We can’t wait to see what’s comes out of BretonLABS next!
